Virtual Design & Construction Technician | On the Journey to Becoming a Professional Electrical Engineer

There’s a unique rhythm you grow into when you’re raised in New York City. It’s more than a place — it’s a mindset. We’re known for our grit, for being resilient and unapologetically bold. From the way we drive to the intensity in our eyes, there’s often a misunderstood toughness that masks the deep love, compassion, and drive within us. Beneath the surface, many of us are fighters — not just for survival, but for purpose.

My roots run deep. My mother and grandmother came to New York from Grenada, and my father from Guyana, all in search of something better. They planted seeds of strength and perseverance that continue to grow in me. Eventually, I left New York for Orlando, Florida, chasing dreams of my own. Since childhood, my mother and grandmother raised my siblings and me with hope in their hearts — hope that we’d grow up healthy, educated, and full of purpose.

From a young age, I was taught to embrace opportunity. I dabbled in ballet, tap dance, art, photography, knitting — you name it. While none of those passions stuck long-term, they all shaped me in their own way. Still, as I entered high school, I hit a low point. I felt lost, disconnected, and uncertain about my place in the world. Life threw curveballs — personal struggles, family tension, and friendships that faded. I slipped into depression, isolating myself and losing the energy to even care for myself.

Then something small — almost accidental — sparked a major shift. I enrolled in a technical high school and was initially placed in a computer course that didn’t resonate. I felt stuck… until one day, a friend left his electrical book on the table. Curiosity got the best of me. I flipped through it, asked questions, and something clicked. That moment changed the entire trajectory of my life. I transferred into electrical installation and began the journey toward becoming an electrician — and now, an engineering technologist-technician.

The road has not been easy, especially as a minority woman in the S.T.E.A.M. fields. But that’s exactly why I created Brilliantly Cultured — to uplift, encourage, and inspire others. No matter where you're from, what you look like, or how you identify, you deserve a future that reflects your passion and purpose. I know countless individuals around the world who are brilliant, gifted, and full of potential — and I’m going to connect with them, learn from them, and help amplify their voices.

Because change doesn’t wait. It starts now. And I’m here for it — boldly, brilliantly, and unapologetically.

Our founder is of Caribbean descent and goes by Sarona J. Corlette. She aspires to be an Engineer Technologist- Technician as well as an advocate for women in the S.T.E.A.M community. As a transferred student, she vowed to herself, to accomplish everything she wanted in life the second time around. Sarona graduated from DeVry University online twice to obtain her Associate Degree and Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology: Electronics with a specialization in Renewable Energy. While pursuing her bachelor's, she hit all the requirements and was able to receive an Associate Degree in Information Technology & Networking, in Spring 2022. Sarona is also a member of the IEEE club and The National Society of Leadership and Success. For over 10 years, Sarona's passion for skilled trades and technology grew while attending school, seminars, and programs and obtaining a career job.

Brilliantly Cultured was created based on key elements our founder experienced. She knew change had to be done to better accommodate all minorities within S.T.E.A.M Industries, especially women who may be faced with many obstacles. Brilliantly Cultured will be a space where minorities can come together to speak on topics, share their experiences, give advice, and teach other dreamers how to strive and learn the skills of this world. This community we built will improve work environments and sculpt a better lifestyle for all.

Any questions, topics of interest, or a story that needs to be told can be sent through Brilliantly Cultured’s contact page to be featured on the website.

Sarona J. Corlette graduated from George Westinghouse Career and Technical High School in Spring 2015, where she continued her education in electrical installation, solar electric, engineering technology, and some carpentry. She attended the School of Cooperative Technical Education in 2018, which is a trade school for high school students as well as adults. Although Sarona graduated from DeVry University, she previously took a few courses at New York City College of Technology. Over the years, Sarona captured photos and videos of her work whether it was a school assignment, project, or her experience in the field.
