Is S.T.E.A.M A Career Choice For You?
To understand your choices, you must know first what each option can bring. The acronym S.T.E.A.M is short for science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. The majority of schools may cover the basics of each acronym which can later impact an individual's life. The beauty behind S.T.E.A.M careers is how each field contributes to life on earth.
Ever heard the saying, “why are they teaching us these curriculums if we’re not going to use them in real life"? Science: The study of the natural and social world through experiments, observations, and evidence. The environment we live in is such a precious place that has many unknown variables. Scientists, innovators, and advocates of this planet research the why, how, and ways to improve the damaged parts of the world.
Technology: An article, A Comprehensive Definition of Technology from an Ethological Perspective was written by La Shun L. Carroll noted author Carl Mitcham (1978) defined technology as “human making or using of material artifacts in all forms and aspects” (pg. 232). Technology is the tool we use every day to make complex things easier and more efficient. Smart technology is advancing because we as humans are gaining the knowledge and drive to create better technology that in return can benefit the environment we live in. A few examples of technology are smartphones, the internet, software, etc. Technology can be viewed through a variety of lenses such as information, engineering, communication, medical, and so on.
Engineering: Engineering is the backbone of foundations. We found a reason to build and create everyday innovations using science, technology, and math. From houses to bridges, automobiles, and computers to so much more.
Arts: The most beautiful versatile form of expression, entertainment, and emotion is art. Art can be viewed from a person's senses. The five senses: smell, touch, taste, see and hear. The sound of birds chirping, looking at paintings, a sommelier, chef, sculpture, music and so much more. It’s a form of entertainment, expression, and emotion.
Mathematics: From the basics to the most complex scenarios, we use some kind of mathematical equation to perform a task. Whether it is in the store purchasing items, counting money, baking, or working as a tradesperson the use of math will come up.
Science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics plays a major role in our life, the way we live, and our environment. The individuals who choose to follow one of those paths are contributing a lot more to this world than they can ever imagine.
